WriteCraft browser extension, WriteCraft for Windows and writecraft.councilforge.com. Last updated October 29, 2026.
The short version
Spelling and grammar are checked on your own computer. What you type stays there unless you ask for something that needs the server: an AI rewrite, a tone reading, a sentence correction, or a problem report. WriteCraft has no advertising, no analytics and no tracking, and sells nothing about you to anyone.
What the extension can see
The extension asks Chrome for access to the websites you visit, because it has to see the text box you are typing in to underline mistakes and put a fix into it. It reads text boxes as you type in them. The checking runs inside the extension on your computer; that text is not sent anywhere for spelling and grammar.
You can turn checking off for every site in the extension's Options, and list only the sites you want.
WriteCraft for Windows
WriteCraft for Windows can check your writing in other programs, such as Word, Outlook, Notepad, Teams and Slack. To do that it reads the text box you are typing in, on this computer, and checks it on this computer only. It uses the same Windows accessibility system that screen readers use.
It never reads:
- password boxes, or any box that will not say whether it is one;
- programs on its skip-list, which starts with password managers, code editors and terminals, and remote-desktop and virtual-machine windows (you can add or remove programs);
- windows that run as administrator.
Nothing it reads is saved or sent anywhere: the text is held in memory for one check and then dropped. It is not written to disk, logs or error reports, and it is not part of a "Something's wrong" report. Text is sent to an AI provider only when you select it and ask for a rewrite yourself, the same as anywhere else in WriteCraft.
To pause it, click the small round WriteCraft button by the text box (or the tray icon) and choose a pause, or "Turn off in this program". To turn it off completely, open WriteCraft for Windows, Settings, "Check in every program", and switch it off.
When text leaves your computer
- AI rewrites, tone readings and sentence corrections send the text you selected to the WriteCraft server, which passes it to an AI provider (the one you set up, or the server's shared one if you were given it) and sends the answer back.
- "Something's wrong" reports send what you type in the report, the email address you give (if you are signed out), and facts about the app on your computer: its version, browser and system, whether you are signed in, which server it uses and whether that server answered, its settings, the name of the website you are on (never the full address), and its recent error messages. Never the text you were writing.
- Automatic error reports send the same facts when an app hits an error it was not expecting, a few times at most per visit.
- Documents you save in the WriteCraft web app are stored on the server so you can open them again.
What the server keeps
- Your account: email address, and a password hash or the fact that you use Google sign-in.
- Your dictionary words and the suggestions you chose to ignore, so they follow you between computers.
- Documents you saved, and their earlier versions.
- Your settings, and any AI keys you saved, which are stored encrypted.
- Problem reports and error reports, as described above, so the server's owner can find and fix problems and reply to you. Erasing your account removes yours.
- For each AI request: when, which feature, which model, how long it took and how many characters, not the text itself.
- A record of sign-ins and account changes, for security.
Who else gets it
Only the AI provider that answers a request you made, and Council Forge (its assistant, Cassini), which reads problem reports to suggest the likely cause to the server's owner. Nothing is shared for advertising, profiling or sale.
Erasing your data
In the web app, Settings, Your account, Erase my account removes your account, documents, dictionary, keys and settings from the server. Removing the extension removes everything it kept on your computer.
